Shimla: In a significant show of solidarity with the state government’s push for fiscal prudence, members of the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) Officers Association have voluntarily relinquished their electricity subsidy.
The Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service officers filled out the necessary forms during their annual convention held at Hotel Peterhoff, which was presided over by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
The move comes just weeks after Chief Minister Sukhu and his Cabinet colleagues publicly gave up their power subsidies, marking a growing trend among state officials to lead by example in tackling Himachal Pradesh’s mounting debt crisis.
Setting the tone for financial discipline
Addressing the convention, CM Sukhu praised the HPAS officers for their proactive decision, calling it a “step towards a self-reliant Himachal”. He reiterated his appeal to affluent citizens, especially those with multiple electricity meters, to voluntarily forgo their subsidies and contribute to the state’s economic revival.
“In times of financial strain, the leadership is about actions, not words. I urge every well-off citizen to join this initiative for the greater good of Himachal,” Sukhu said.
State’s financial struggles in focus
The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s alarming financial situation, with a debt burden exceeding Rs 90,000 crore.
He pointed out that the government spends approximately Rs 2,200 crore annually on electricity subsidies and Rs 200 crore monthly on salaries and pensions for employees of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB).
“The subsidies are meant for those who genuinely need them. It’s time for us to ensure that government resources reach the underprivileged,” Sukhu emphasised.
Cabinet colleagues, Congress MLAs join in
Following Sukhu’s lead, all Cabinet members and Congress MLAs had also surrendered their power subsidies.
The Chief Minister had personally submitted his subsidy waiver form to HPSEB Chairman Sanjay Gupta, urging the public to do the same through the HPSEB online portal, helpline numbers 1100 or 1912, or by visiting their nearest electricity sub-division office.
