A rockfall incident in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul region on Monday has once again underscored the serious risks associated with travelling through mountainous terrain, particularly for tourists unfamiliar with hill conditions.

The incident occurred around 1:20 PM in the Mosuma Thetup Kurkur (Mahal Bok) area under Patwar Circle Kolong, when rocks suddenly dislodged from a steep slope and struck a moving taxi. The vehicle sustained damage, and two tourists — Manojit Singh Roy and his wife Paulini Singha — suffered minor injuries. The driver, Deepak Tamang, escaped unhurt.

The injured were promptly shifted to the Regional Hospital in Keylong, where doctors confirmed that both are out of danger. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder that even routine travel in hill districts can quickly turn hazardous.

Experts and local authorities point out that such incidents are not uncommon in high-altitude regions like Lahaul, where fragile geology, steep slopes, and rapidly changing weather conditions increase the likelihood of landslides and falling rocks. Narrow roads carved into mountainsides further amplify the risk, leaving little margin for error or escape.

With the onset of the tourist season, officials are urging visitors to exercise heightened caution. Travellers are advised to avoid stopping in landslide-prone zones, adhere strictly to local advisories, and plan journeys during safer daylight hours. Over-speeding, unnecessary halts, and ignoring warning signs can significantly increase vulnerability in such spots.

The District Disaster Management Authority has reiterated that awareness and responsible travel behaviour are critical in preventing tragedies. Tourists, in particular, are encouraged to understand that hill travel demands patience, preparedness, and respect for natural conditions — factors that can often make the difference between a safe journey and a life-threatening situation.

As Himachal Pradesh continues to attract large numbers of visitors, incidents like this highlight the urgent need for both authorities and travellers to prioritise safety over convenience, ensuring that the beauty of the mountains is experienced responsibly rather than recklessly.
