Shimla:
As torrential rains continue to impact tourist footfall in Himachal Pradesh, both the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) and private hotel operators have launched aggressive discount campaigns to revive the state’s struggling tourism industry. Discounts ranging from 20% to 50% are now being offered to attract tourists back to the hills.
Following heavy monsoon disruptions and natural calamities that adversely affected the tourism sector, this strategic price cut aims to bring business back on track during the ongoing off-season.
Himachal Pradesh, a popular monsoon destination, has seen a steep decline in tourist arrivals due to frequent landslides and road blockages caused by heavy rainfall. In response, the HPTDC has rolled out a monsoon discount package offering 20% to 40% off at its hotels, valid from July 15 to September 12.
Private hoteliers, not far behind, have announced even steeper discounts ranging from 30% to 50%, in an attempt to lure back wary travelers. Some hoteliers have even slashed room tariffs by half.
Advance bookings pick up after discount announcements
Despite the gloomy weather, the price drop seems to be having a positive impact. According to an official of the Federation of Himachal Hotel and Restaurant Associations, advance bookings have picked up steadily since July 15, indicating renewed tourist interest.
“The response to our monsoon packages shows that travelers still want to experience Himachal’s natural beauty and serene atmosphere,” the official said.
The authorities and hoteliers have reassured tourists that most major tourist spots in Himachal are safe and open for travel. Enhanced safety protocols and regular monitoring of road conditions are in place to ensure visitor safety.
Dr Rajeev Kumar, Managing Director of HPTDC, said, “Our aim is to ensure that tourists can travel with confidence. The discount offers are part of a broader effort to support the tourism ecosystem while giving travelers value for money.”
Private hoteliers say these offers could extend until October, aligning with the Durga Puja holiday season, traditionally a busy time for Himachal’s tourism sector.
