Flight Lt Thakur is the only officer of his rank to be honoured with the Vir Chakra for Operation Sindoor. His father Narveer Singh Thakur is a retired employee of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, while his mother Amarjeet Kaur serves as a physical education teacher at a government school in Shimla.

President Droupadi Murmu has approved 127 gallantry awards, 40 distinguished service awards and 290 Mention-in-Despatches on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day to honour the bravery and dedication of armed forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel. The gallantry list includes four Kirti Chakras, 15 Vir Chakras, 16 Shaurya Chakras and several other distinguished medals.

A total of nine IAF pilots have been awarded the Vir Chakra for their exceptional performance in Operation Sindoor. The honours recognise those who planned and executed precision strikes deep inside Pakistan, targeting terrorist camps and neutralising imminent threats. The list also features officers who operated the S-400 and other air defence systems to thwart planned enemy attacks on Indian soil.

Flight Lt Thakur’s achievement has made his village and state proud, cementing his place among India’s modern-day war heroes.
