Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla, known as the Queen of Hills, is set to become even more accessible to tourists from across India and abroad, courtesy an ambitious ropeway project.
If the project turns out to be successful, visitors will be able to reach Shimla in just a few hours via the ropeway from Parwanoo. The Ropeway Corporation has begun the formalities for the construction of this ambitious 38-km ropeway, which will be built under a public-private partnership (PPP) model by the Himachal Pradesh government. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 6,800 crore.
Tata Consultancy tasked to prepare DPR
According to the corporation, the land has already been identified and the initial survey has been completed. Tata Consultancy has been entrusted with preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for this project and work on the DPR is underway with an allocation of Rs 2.5 crore.
A prominent ropeway company has expressed its interest in executing the project, which is expected to benefit thousands of residents and offer tourists a breathtaking aerial view of the scenic hills between Shimla and Solan.
India’s longest ropeway to be completed in 8 phases
This ropeway is expected to be the longest in India and will be completed in eight phases. The initial plan suggests that the ropeway will have a capacity to carry 3,000 to 5,000 passengers per hour. Planned stations along the route include Parwanoo-Jabli, Jabli-Dagshai, Dagshai-Barog, Barog-Solan, Solan-Karol Tibba, Karol Tibba-IT City Waknaghat, IT City Waknaghat-Shoghi, Shoghi-Tara Devi Temple and Tara Devi Temple to Shimla.
“The survey for the Parwanoo-Shimla ropeway is complete and Tata Consultancy is working on the DPR. The project is expected to cost around Rs. 6,800 crore and once completed, it will provide a convenient travel option for both tourists and residents to reach Shimla,” said a senior official of the Ropeway Corporation.
