The second phase of the Parvati Hydropower Project, a flagship initiative by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) with a capacity of 800 MW, is set to be completed by March 2025. This was said by Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik in response to a query raised by Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh Indu Goswami in Parliament.
Highlighting the progress of the project, the minister revealed that partial power generation began as early as September 2018. Since then, the project has successfully produced 1,129 million units of electricity, contributing significantly to the region’s energy needs.
The completion of the second phase is expected to further bolster power generation and reinforce Himachal Pradesh’s position as a hub for clean and sustainable energy in the country.
In another update, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Kirtivardhan Singh informed Rajya Sabha MP Indu Bala about central assistance provided to address human-wildlife conflicts in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
Under the annual plan submitted by the Himachal Pradesh government, the central government has allocated Rs 19.61 lakh during 2023-24 under Project Tiger and Project Elephant. The funds aim to protect local residents from elephant disturbances and reduce conflicts between humans and wildlife.
The minister explained that the initiative includes innovative measures such as beekeeping and apiculture to deter elephants from entering residential areas. These steps are expected to promote coexistence while ensuring the safety of both humans and wildlife.
