Una:
Panic swept through the official residence of Una Superintendent of Police Amit Yadav late Tuesday night after a massive nine-foot-long python, weighing nearly 90 kg, was spotted slithering within the premises.
What followed was a dramatic midnight rescue led by local snake rescuer Jatinder Kumar, who arrived swiftly with his young daughter. Together, the duo successfully captured the snake, bringing a wave of relief to the SP, his family and the officers present on-site.
The python’s sudden appearance within the high-security residential complex triggered immediate concern. The SP’s personal security officer promptly contacted Jatinder Kumar, a well-known local snake handler. Without hesitation, Jatinder, accompanied by his daughter, rushed to the scene.
Facing the hefty reptile under cover of darkness, the rescue operation demanded extreme caution. After nearly 30 minutes of calculated effort, the father-daughter team managed to safely secure the python, placing it temporarily under their care until it could be released back into the wild.
From danger to awareness: Mission snake rescue
Jatinder, speaking after the successful rescue, shared that he has safely captured and released over 300 snakes since March, a mission he carries out with the active support of his daughter. Their goal goes beyond rescue: they seek to dispel fear, superstition and misinformation about snakes.
“We don’t just rescue snakes but also educate people,” Jatinder said. “Most snakes are non-aggressive and don’t pose a threat unless provoked. We want to protect them, not destroy them.”
The rescued python is currently being kept safely at Jatinder’s residence and will be released into Bankhandi Forest, a suitable habitat away from human settlements.
