Shimla:
In a distressing incident highlighting the growing drug crisis in Himachal Pradesh, a woman in Shimla made an emotional plea to the police to arrest her own son, fearing he might die of a drug overdose like his elder brother.
The youth, already addicted to chitta (a synthetic drug), was recently released on bail after being arrested for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
Late at night, around 1.30 am, the desperate mother called the Shimla Superintendent of Police, pleading, “Sir… please take my drug-addicted son back to jail or he will die.” Her only concern now was to save him from addiction.
Seven drug overdose deaths in Shimla in recent months
Investigations revealed that one of the two youth recently arrested with chitta in Shimla had already lost his elder brother to a drug overdose. Both sons, raised by their widowed mother with hopes of a better future, fell victim to the same devastating path. One is now dead and the other is incarcerated — caught between addiction and the law.
This heartbreaking story is not an isolated case. According to reports, Shimla alone has witnessed at least seven overdose deaths among youth in recent months. Experts believe the actual number may be much higher as many families choose to remain silent due to social stigma and fear of police involvement.
SSP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi acknowledged the growing concern, stating: “Chitta is claiming the lives of our youth prematurely. We urge the public to come forward and report any information about drug trafficking so we can take stringent action against the culprits.”
The tragedy in Shimla reflects a broader epidemic sweeping through the region, destroying families and leaving parents helpless. In some cases, even the sole child of a family has died due to overdose, pushing households to the brink of collapse.
