Kullu: A major controversy has cast a shadow over the world-renowned International Kullu Dussehra festival at Kullu in Himachal Pradesh after a clash broke out between Tehsildar Hari Singh Yadav and the followers (‘devolus’) of local deity Bhrigu Rishi.

The incident was caught on camera and has since gone viral on social media, drawing sharp reactions from the public and local leaders.

In a dramatic turn of events, a large group of Bhrigu Rishi’s followers were seen pulling Tehsildar Yadav through the crowded festival grounds towards the deity’s camp. Eyewitnesses claim the confrontation stemmed from alleged misbehaviour by the Kullu SDM towards the devolus during a ritual gathering.

Though the SDM was reportedly the initial point of conflict, it was the Tehsildar who faced the immediate backlash.

Tehsildar forced to offer apology in front of deity

Sources said the scuffle began after a verbal dispute during preparations, which later escalated. In an attempt to defuse tensions, Yadav eventually offered an apology in front of the deity, as demanded by the protesting followers.

Despite the viral footage, no formal police complaint has been filed by the Tehsildar so far. However, administrative sources said an internal inquiry is underway to determine the chain of events and possible misconduct by officials.

Tehsildar Yadav, while speaking to the media, said, “I was mistreated by some individuals. I’ve informed senior officials about the incident.” According to initial reports, the tension between the administration and the local deity groups had been simmering for a while, fuelled by past confrontations and unresolved grievances.

Political leaders join fray, demand disciplinary action

BJP MLA from Banjar Surender Shourie openly criticised the Tehsildar’s conduct and demanded action. He alleged that in 2023 as well, the same official had taken steps to remove deity camps during the festival, leading to similar protests.

“Why does the government continue to deploy such insensitive officials in Kullu? The officer must be removed immediately for disrespecting the sentiments of the Dev Samaj,” Shourie said.
