— Sixteen NGOs from across Himachal Pradesh convened today at Willie’s Park, Shimla, to address the alarming rise in drug abuse, particularly the growing use of “chitta” among youth. Expressing deep concern, the organisations acknowledged that isolated district-level efforts are insufficient to tackle the crisis.

In a unanimous decision, the NGOs resolved to form a state-level umbrella body to lead a coordinated campaign against drug addiction. The newly appointed nodal organization, Sanjeevani, will spearhead a collective movement focused on awareness, youth guidance, and the complete eradication of chitta from the state.

A governing committee for Sanjeevani was constituted during the meeting. O.P. Sharma will serve as Chief Advisor, with Joginder Kanwar as Advisor. Mahendra Kumar was elected President, Naresh Sharma as General Secretary, and Dr. Nitin Vyas as Vice President. Other key members include Surender Thakur, Dr. Joginder Saklani, Titu Thakur, Sanjeev Sharma, and Ratan Thakur. Manish Kumar, Sandeep Okta, Devender Thakur, Pradeep Sharma, Ajay Sharma, and Sanjeev will serve as Secretaries.

D.P. Sharma was appointed Treasurer, Raju Thakur as Office Secretary, and Kamal Thakur as Assistant Media In-charge. Captain Atul Sharma and Manoj will coordinate social media efforts, while Piyush Verma will serve as Legal Advisor. All attendees were designated founding members of the organisation.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahendra Kumar Dharmani announced that Sanjeevani will soon launch a statewide outreach campaign, engaging prominent community figures. A major state-level event is scheduled for the first week of November in Shimla. Dharmani emphasised that Sanjeevani will operate beyond political affiliations, uniting individuals from all parties in a shared mission to eliminate the scourge of chitta.
