Shimla: Himachal Pradesh BJP president Dr Rajeev Bindal has slammed the Congress-led government over the attack on Mandi SDM Omkant Thakur claiming the mining mafia had gone “totally out of control”.
Bindal said it was shocking that SDM Omkant Thakur was allegedly attacked by two illegal mining operatives near Bindravani while inspecting illegal sand mining on Monday evening.
“The attack occurred when SDM Thakur, acting on a tip-off, reached Beas river without police backup to investigate illegal sand mining. As he tried to stop the activity, two intoxicated assailants launched a physical assault. This is very unfortunate and shows the non-seriousness of the Congress government in state,” he said.
Blames it for rise in anti-social activities
Accusing the Congress government of sheltering the mining mafia, Bindal said this was a major reason why such kinds of anti-social activities were on a continuous rise in the state. He said Baddi Barotiwala, Una, Mandi and Kangra were some of the major districts affected by the mining mafia’s activities.
The BJP state chief claimed that Nurpur residents of Takiya Chanor village of Chanor panchayat under the Indora police station were up in arms against the unabated illegal mining on government land and in Chhonchh rivulet.
Claims JCB machines from Punjab mining in state
“As per information, a large number of JCB machines of stone crushers of neighbouring Punjab descend on this area of the Indora Assembly constituency in Kangra district at night and allegedly indulge in illegal mining. This incident happened recently in January 2025,” he said.
The BJP leader claimed that the Enforcement Directorate arresting two persons in a money laundering case linked to alleged illegal sand and minerals mining from rivers in the states of Himachal Pradesh also indicated political asylum to mining mafia.
