Manali: A 21-year-old tourist from Kerala was k*illed and a woman accompanying him was injured after their motorcycle skidded and crashed inside the Atal Tunnel near Manali in Himachal Pradesh on Monday evening.
The accident occurred barely 100 metres before the north portal, when the speeding bike went out of control and hit the footpath, the police said.
According to the Manali police, the duo was heading towards Sissu when the mishap took place. The motorcycle reportedly slipped due to high speed inside the tunnel, causing both riders to be flung off the vehicle. They were rushed to Manali hospital in an ambulance, where doctors declared the youth dead on arrival.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Rizwan (21), son of Abdul Kareem, a resident of Cheriyam Purath, Edayur Tirur in Malappuram district of Kerala. The injured woman, Hala Hind (20), also a resident of Kerala, is undergoing treatment.
Manali DSP KD Sharma said that the body had been taken for post-mortem and the family had been informed. “The body will be handed over to relatives after they arrive. The woman is under medical care. The police have registered a case and further investigation is underway,” he added.
