Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Glowing tributes paid in Palampur, hometown of decorated officer who became face of the conflict

On the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, solemn ceremonies and glowing tributes marked the occasion in Palampur, the hometown of Param Vir Chakra awardee Capt Vikram Batra who became the face of India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict.


The event, jointly organised by the Sub-Divisional Administration and the Indian Ex-Servicemen League, resonated with patriotic fervour and heartfelt homage to the fallen heroes.

A floral tribute was paid at the statues of Capt Vikram Batra, Capt Saurabh Kaliaand Ashok Chakra awardee Maj Sudhir Walia. Among those who paid homage were Captain Batra’s family members and the family of martyr Capt Saurabh Kalia, who was among the first soldiers to sacrifice his life in the war.
His father NK Kalia and brother Vaibhav Kalia joined dignitaries, officers and veterans in offering their respects.


Present on the occasion were Palampur Municipal Corporation Mayor Gopal Nag, Deputy Mayor Rajkumar, SDM Netra Meti, Tehsildar Sajan Bagga, DFO Sanjeev Sharma and Additional Commissioner Vikas Sharma. Indian Ex-Servicemen League President Ramesh Dadhwal, Vice-Presidents Santosh Katoch and Rasan Chand Katoch, General Secretary Ranjeet Katoch, and Press Secretary Kuldeep Rana were also in attendance, along with retired Colonel Suresh Kumar.


Mayor Gopal Nag said the day serves as a reminder of the indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice made by India’s brave soldiers during the Kargil War. “Palampur takes immense pride in being the land of heroes like Capt. Vikram Batra and Capt. Saurabh Kalia, who laid down their lives for the nation,” he said.

Before the tributes, SDM Netra Meti administered an oath to all present, pledging to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and sacrifice symbolised by the Kargil martyrs. “This day is not just about remembering our heroes, but about drawing inspiration from their courage and commitment,” she said.


The ceremony witnessed active participation from NCC cadets of local colleges, retired servicemen, and members of the public. The air echoed with slogans of patriotism as wreaths were laid and memories of the fallen heroes honored with reverence.


Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, commemorates India’s victory over Pakistani intruders in the high-altitude conflict of 1999.
