Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s visit to Kangra on Tuesday has triggered intense discussions within Congress ranks about potential leaders for the constituency.
Names like Surinder Choudhary (Kaku), Nishu Mongra, and Ajay Verma have come to the forefront. Though no official candidate has been announced, their rising prominence has energized party workers in the region.

Ajay Verma, who has a strong foundation in Congress politics, began his journey with the NSUI during his college days. Over the years, he has held key positions, including Youth Congress President for Kangra and General Secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee. His strategic contributions during the Nagrota elections have showcased his leadership skills.

Nishu Mongra, currently Chairman of the Marketing Committee, has also been a loyal party worker since his NSUI days. His tenure as a BDC Member and Zila General Secretary reflects his deep connection with grassroots politics.

Surinder Choudhary (Kaku), a seasoned leader, brings extensive electoral experience to the table. Having served as an MLA in 2003, he has contested multiple elections over the years, solidifying his presence in Kangra’s political landscape.

Role of Grassroots Leaders in Strengthening Congress

Adding to the list of potential contenders is Nageshwar Mankotia, a former block Congress leader with a history of contesting elections for the Zila Parishad. His longstanding ties with local party cadres and knowledge of the region’s political dynamics can help Congress.

While CM Sukhu’s visit has elevated the profiles of these leaders, Congress cadres remain uncertain about who will ultimately carry the party’s banner in Kangra.

Uncertainty Over Congress’s Final Choice

The Kangra constituency is currently represented by BJP’s Pawan Kajal, a seasoned politician who has switched between Congress and BJP in his career. Kajal’s stronghold poses a significant challenge for the Congress, making it imperative for the party to field a strong and united team.

Although Sukhu has instructed local leaders to organize meetings and strengthen the party base, internal competition among the hopefuls could hinder progress. Without a unified strategy, Congress may struggle to regain this crucial seat.

Building Unity Amidst Internal Rivalries

CM Sukhu’s efforts to promote these leaders signal a broader strategy to reinvigorate the Congress in Kangra. However, party insiders believe that a lack of unity among these prominent faces could weaken their chances against the BJP’s well-established machinery.

As political gossip intensifies, all eyes are on whether the Congress can leverage this momentum to present a cohesive front. The next few months will be critical in determining the party’s future in Kangra.
