The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has officially launched its first National Cadet Corps (NCC) unit, marking a historic step in blending military discipline with advanced technical education.
The newly established Air NCC contingent will function under the 1 HP Air Squadron NCC, Kullu, and will focus on cutting-edge domains such as aeromodelling, drone systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, and entrepreneurship.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi; Dr. Tushar Jain, Dean of Students; and Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, Commanding Officer of 1 HP Air Squadron NCC.
Prof. Behera expressed happiness over the formation of IIT Mandi’s first NCC unit, calling it a significant step that combines technology-driven thinking with patriotic spirit — a powerful force for nation-building. He added that the initiative would nurture innovation while instilling a deep sense of national service and defense readiness among students.
Dr. Jain appreciated the collaborative efforts of his team and Wing Commander Sharma in making the NCC unit a reality.
Wing Commander Sharma praised the enthusiasm and discipline shown by IIT Mandi students, noting their strong commitment to military values and national ideals. He said that the forward-thinking ideas displayed by the cadets during the selection process reaffirm that India’s future rests in capable and visionary hands.
The formation of this NCC unit is also expected to strengthen the performance of NCC Group Headquarters Shimla and the PHHP&C Directorate in upcoming national events, including the All India Vayu Sainik Camp (AIVSC) and the Republic Day Camp (RDC).
