Sundernagar-based teacher’s three more children’s stories added to CBSE, ICSE curriculum

Mandi:Pawan Chauhan, a young literary gem from Sundernagar has added another feather in his cap as three of his children’s stories have been added to the CBSE and ICSE curriculum, beginning 2024-25.
These compositions, part of Viva Education’s ‘Aviral’ series, will be read by students nationwide in the CBSE and ICSE-affiliated schools. In the seventh grade, his composition ‘Shresth Bharat’ is included as a dialogue, while in the eighth grade, his stories ‘Ghonsla’ and ‘Chitkul Ki Yatra’ will be featured for students.

His works find a place in the books which have compositions from renowned literary figures like Surdas, Tulsidas, Kabir, Rahim, Rabindranath Tagore, Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar,’ Maithili Sharan Gupta, Jayshankar Prasad, Sohanlal Dwivedi, Sumitranandan Pant, and others.
Earlier, the CBSE has already incorporated his children’s story, ‘Khilono Ko Lag Gayi Thand’, in the Class II curriculum of CBSE. It will become an integral part of the Hindi textbook ‘Nav Unmesh’, beginning in the 2024-25 academic session. This inclusion in New Saraswati House’s textbook aligns with the National Curriculum Framework-2022 (Foundation Level) and aims to instill a scientific perspective while fostering children’s interest and concentration.

It has been included in the book which also showcases works by acclaimed authors such as Nirankar Dev ‘Sevak’, Shyam Sundar Srivastava ‘Komal’, Dr Vinod Prasoon, RC Prasad Singh, Naina Adgarkar, Raja Chaurasiya and Vandana Chauhan.
Pavan Chauhan’s stories have also been included in the textbooks of the Himachal Pradesh Education Board for the fifth grade, the seventh-grade textbook of Maharashtra’s curriculum ‘Sugam Bharati,’ the fifth-grade textbook of the Lead program, and the seventh-grade textbook of CBSE-affiliated schools named ‘Saraswati Sargam.’ Additionally, his poem ‘Sayani’ is part of the CBSE curriculum for the seventh grade in the book ‘Sarvodaya.’ His travel memoir is included in the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala’s BCom program, and in the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University’s BA program in Nagpur
Chauhan, who holds postgraduate degrees in both mathematics and Hindi, currently serves as a lecturer at the Senior Secondary School at Sainji in Sundernagar sub-division of Mandi district. Actively involved in poetry, storytelling, children’s stories and feature writing, his works find regular publication in leading Indian newspapers and magazines. His significant contributions to Himachal children’s literature have earned him a place in various state and university curricula.

Chauhan’s literary works have been translated into the Nepali language too. He also contributed to a regular tourism column titled ‘Tour’ in the Sunday magazine ‘Umang’ of the national newspaper ‘Rashtriya Sahara’ in 2014.
His published repertoire includes ‘Kinare Ki Chattan’ (a collection of poetry), ‘Vah Bilkul Chup Thi’ (short stories), ‘Bholu Bhalu Sudhar Gaya’ (children’s stories), ‘Himachal Ka Bal Sahitya’ (research reference), ‘Jadon Se Judav’ (initiative for heritage conservation), ’21 Shreshth Balman Ki Kahaniyan Himachal’ (edited book), ‘Bindli Aur Laddu’ (children’s stories), and ‘Poonch Kata Chuha’ (children’s stories).
As a guest editor, he has curated columns on children in ‘Divyata’, a monthly magazine published in Lucknow, and ‘Hastakshar’, a web magazine. Moreover, he oversees children’s literature (occasional) in the quarterly magazine ‘Shail Sutra’ published in Nainital.

Chauhan has garnered numerous accolades for his commendable works, including the Hindi Sahitya Bhushan Award for children’s literature, the second prize in a story competition organised by the Himachal Literature Council (Mandi) and the Himtaru State Award for children’s literature in 2017 (Kullu). Further recognition includes the ‘Dharm Prakash Sahitya Mani Award 2018’ from Nava Prayas (Shimla) and the ‘Children’s Literature Creation Award 2019’ from Balvatika and Vinayak University, Rajasthan.
