Dedication to classical music brings national recognition; credits family and mentors for success

Utkarsh Sharma, a gifted young vocalist from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the top rank nationwide in the UGC NET-JRF examination in the field of music.
Scoring an impressive 240 out of 300 marks in his second attempt, Utkarsh has not only made his family proud but also brought accolades to his hometown and the entire Himachal Pradesh.
Currently pursuing his master’s degree in music at the University of Delhi, Utkarsh has consistently demonstrated academic and artistic excellence. He completed his undergraduate studies at Delhi University’s prestigious Hindu College where he secured first rank in the college and stood third at the university level.
Distinction across competitive platforms
Utkarsh’s musical journey is marked by numerous accolades. At the University of Delhi’s annual music competitions, he secured positions a total of eight times across categories such as Hindustani classical vocal, light music and harmonium. His achievements include four first-place finishes, three second places and one third place.
In addition, he topped the Open Youth Festival for two consecutive years, showcasing his consistency and growing command over the art form.
Nationwide performances strengthen his musical footprint
Alongside his academic pursuits, Utkarsh has been actively performing on prestigious stages in major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Dehradun, Shimla, Siliguri and Gwalior. His wide-ranging performances have further solidified his reputation as a promising young artiste in the Indian classical music scene.
Utkarsh attributes his success to the unwavering support of his parents, renowned musicians and educators Anoop Sharma and Richa Sharma. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mentors at Delhi University, including Dr Vineet Goswami, Dr Rajpal Singh, Dr Alish Mohan, Prof Ananya Kumar De and Prof Ujesh Pratap Singh.
Paying special tribute to his grandfather and musical guru Pandit Bhimsen Sharma, Utkarsh said that his guidance had been instrumental in shaping his understanding of music and giving direction to his journey.
