SHIMLA:

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh woke up to a pristine white blanket on Wednesday (November 5, 2025) as fresh snowfall was experienced in Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and parts of Chamba. Popular hill destinations such as Chitkul in Kinnaur recorded about 2.5 to 3 inches of snow, marking the season’s second major spell. The India-Tibet border region sparkled under the morning sun, turning the valley into a picture-perfect silver landscape.

Locals reported that the upper areas of Kinnaur are now covered in a thick layer of snow, while the chill has intensified even in lower towns like Reckong Peo and Rampur. Although Rampur witnessed cloudy skies since early morning, Shimla enjoyed bright sunshine through the day.

Key routes closed after fresh snowfall

In the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, intermittent snowfall continued from early Wednesday, leading to the closure of several high-altitude roads. Authorities confirmed that the Manali-Leh highway, along with the Koksar-Rohtang and Gramphu-Losar stretches, has been blocked due to snow accumulation.

However, connectivity between Manali, Atal Tunnel and Koksar remains open. As per reports, Rohtang and Kunzum passes received around 15 cm of snow each, while Koksar recorded nearly 10 cm. The wintry conditions didn’t dampen the spirits of tourists, who were seen enjoying snow games and capturing the scenic vistas.

Mercury dips further; clear skies ahead

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, light snowfall and rain are likely in isolated parts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba and Kullu districts on Thursday. Rain is also expected in a few pockets of Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur. The weather is forecast to remain largely clear across the state from November 6 to 11.

The Met office predicted a 2°C to 4°C drop in minimum temperatures across mid and higher hills, with a further decline of up to 5°C over the next few days.

During the past 24 hours, Kothi recorded 7 mm of rainfall, followed by Sangla (6.2 mm), Brahmaur (4.2 mm), and Kalpa (3.6 mm). Minimum temperatures plummeted sharply as Keylong recorded -0.4°C, Kukumseri -1.8°C, and Tabo -2.2°C while Shimla settled at 8.4°C and Manali at 6.9°C.
