SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh is reeling under the impact of incessant heavy rainfall, which continues to batter the region despite prior alerts from the Meteorological Department. The ongoing extreme weather has caused widespread disruption, crippling normal life in both urban and rural areas. Hundreds of roads have been blocked, and vital services like electricity and water supply have been severely hit in many parts of the state.

As of Wednesday morning (10 am), seven national highways and over 1,160 roads across the state remain closed. The worst-hit districts include Mandi (282 roads shut), Shimla (234), Kullu (204), Sirmaur (137) and Chamba (over 100).

In addition, 2,477 power transformers and 720 water supply schemes are currently non-functional, leaving thousands without basic utilities.

Landslides trigger panic in villages; several homes damaged

A sudden landslide in the Ner Gharwasda panchayat of Jogindernagar sub-division in Mandi district has damaged at least 15 homes. The incident has sparked fear among residents, prompting immediate evacuation efforts by local police and administration.

Rescue and relief operations are being led by Jogindernagar SDM Manish Chaudhary. The authorities are relocating families to safer locations, while nearby villages like Kundooni are also being evacuated due to ongoing land subsidence and the looming risk of further landslides.

Tragedy strikes in Sundernagar: 6 dead in landslide

A devastating landslide in the Jungambagh area of Sundernagar sub-division on Tuesday evening resulted in the deaths of six persons. Within seconds, debris from a collapsing hillside engulfed two houses.

Three bodies were recovered on Tuesday, and three more were pulled from the rubble on Wednesday. Among the deceased were Surinder Kaur and Gurpreet Singh, whose bodies were retrieved after rescuers cut through the roof of their house. Another victim, identified as Prakash Sharma, was found buried along with his scooter.

Relief and rescue efforts continue

As landslides continue to threaten hilly areas and key infrastructure remains inaccessible, the state administration has assured all possible assistance to affected families. Emergency teams are on high alert, with rescue operations continuing in multiple districts.

With weather conditions showing no immediate signs of improvement, the risk of further devastation looms large. The government has urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain vigilant and cooperate with evacuation efforts.
