In line with predictions by the Meteorological Department, several districts of Himachal Pradesh experienced consistent rainfall on Friday (April 11, 2025), offering much-needed relief from the rising heat.
The rain started in Dharamshala early in the morning, with similar weather witnessed in Shimla starting around 10.30 am. Hamirpur and Chamba also received rainfall, significantly lowering temperatures.
Light snowfall was recorded on the high mountain peaks, including Rohtang Pass, Baralacha and the Seven Sisters range in Lahaul-Spiti.
People across the state, who had started experiencing summer-like heat in April, welcomed the change in weather. In the tribal region of Pangi (Chamba), temperatures dropped noticeably, while farmers expressed relief, saying the rainfall was essential for wheat crops.
For farmers, the timely rainfall has come as a blessing for their crops.
Stormy winds, hailstorm disrupt normal life in several parts
An orange alert for rain, snowfall and thunderstorms remains in effect across eight districts, including Chamba, Kangra and Kullu.
In Jogindernagar (Mandi), heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds turned day into night, with dark clouds forcing vehicles on the Mandi-Pathankot highway to use headlights.
The storm disrupted a local fair, causing flooding in the fairground and affecting vendors and traders. Rainfall also led to waterlogging along key roads.
Shimla witnessed heavy downpour on Friday morning, leading to flooding in the Lower Bazaar area. Rainwater entered several shops through the streets and stairways, with blocked drains worsening the situation.
Local shopkeepers expressed frustration over the municipal corporation’s inaction despite repeated complaints regarding poor drainage. The intense rainfall damaged merchandise and disrupted business activities in the heart of the city.
Prediction for inclement weather for 48 hours
The Meteorological Center in Shimla has predicted continued rough weather over the next 24 to 48 hours, particularly in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Sirmaur, Solan and Una.
While most places are receiving relief from the heat, Una continues to sizzle with temperatures nearing 40°C, due to a lack of rainfall.
