Himachal weather: Over 150 roads still blocked due to snow; yellow alert for thunderstorm in seven districts on April 6

Following mild to heavy snowfall in March-end, about 150 roads, including three national highways, are blocked in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. A majority of these are in tribal Lahaul-Spiti district.

A section of the Manali-Keylong road near Sissu has collapsed, necessitating one-way vehicular movement due to road cracks. Police personnel have been deployed on both ends of the affected route, allowing vehicles to proceed only after assessing the situation.

A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorm and lightning in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Kinnaur on April 3 and 4, in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi districts on April 5 and Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur district on April 6. The impact of a western disturbance is expected to persist till April 6, potentially resulting in snowfall in higher elevations and rain in lower areas.

Wednesday saw a surge in maximum temperatures across the state, with an increase ranging from three to seven degrees Celsius. In an unexpected turn, Tuesday night temperatures in Shimla surpassed those in Solan, with Shimla registering a minimum temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius compared to Solan’s 8.6 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department forecasts renewed activity from the western disturbance beginning April 3.

The farmers, residents and commuters have been advised to exercise caution in view of the inclement weather and take necessary preemptive steps.
