Himachal weather: May snowfall on Lahaul peaks mesmerises tourists; wet spell leads to plunge in mercury

DHARAMSHALA: Fresh snowfall blanketed the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) morning while intermittent rain continued in the lower regions, intensifying the cold in the valley even in the month of May.

Cloudy skies were also reported from several areas of Kullu, adding to the unusual weather pattern.
Despite the cold, the region is witnessing a steady surge in tourists, especially those arriving in large numbers from Manali to enjoy the late spring snowfall. With the rest of the country reeling under summer heat, the cool climes of Lahaul-Spiti have become an attractive destination for travelers.

Tourist influx rising steadily in Manali

Many visitors are opting for excursions through the Atal Tunnel towards the Lahaul valley, exploring its scenic locales and extending their journeys up to Darcha, which has now been opened to tourists.

The growing footfall is bringing renewed vibrancy to the valley’s tourism sector, providing a much-needed boost to local businesses. Tourism stakeholders in Lahaul said hotel and homestay bookings were increasing and they expected a full-fledged tourism season after May 15.

Strong western disturbance active till May 10

The Indian Meteorological Department has said a strong western disturbance is expected to affect the region from May 6 to 10, bringing widespread rain.
An orange alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla on May 6 and 7, with the possibility of gusty winds (40 to 50 km/h), lightning and intense showers.

A yellow alert is in place for the remaining districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Kinnaur, where adverse weather is also predicted. However, skies are expected to clear by May 8 in these areas.
