Himachal weather likely to change as Met dept predicts snow in higher reaches

Weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh are likely to change as an active western disturbance may bring rain and snowfall in higher reaches of the state, the Meteorological Department said on Saturday.


Cloudy conditions prevailed over the state capital Shimla and adjoining areas, indicating a shift in weather.


According to the Met office, chances of rain and snowfall are likely in high-altitude areas due to the western disturbance. Minimum temperatures have dipped sharply, with 11 locations in the state recording temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. Tribal belts witnessed sub-zero temperatures, with Tabo (-6.2°C), Kukumseri (-3.5°C) and Samdo (-2.4°C) recording freezing conditions.


Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 10°C, while Sundernagar logged 4.1°C, Bhuntar 2.6°C, Kalpa 2.8°C, Dharamshala 7.2°C, Una 6.4°C, Solan 3.8°C and Manali 4.4°C. Other notable readings included Seobag at 1.2°C and Bajaura at 3.2°C.


The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has forecast rain and snowfall in higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba and Kangra districts on December 13 and 14. From December 15 to 19, the weather across the state is expected to remain largely dry.


Meanwhile, dense fog was reported in Bilaspur and light fog in Mandi, prompting the Met office to issue a fog alert for a few places. Minimum temperatures in higher and adjoining mid-hill areas are likely to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next two to three days, while maximum temperatures may also dip by 2-4 degrees. No major change is expected in the rest of the state over the next few days.


Minimum temperatures across the state showed a significant dip, with Shimla recording 10.0°C, while Manali registered 4.4°C. Kalpa recorded a low of 2.8°C and Bhuntar 2.6°C, whereas Dharamshala settled at 7.2°C. Solan and Sundernagar logged 3.8°C and 4.1°C respectively. Una recorded 6.4°C, followed by Kangra at 7.4°C and Mandi at 5.3°C.


In other parts, Bilaspur reported 6.0°C, Hamirpur 6.2°C, Palampur 5.0°C and Kufri 9.4°C. Jubbarhatti recorded 8.4°C, while Narkanda stood at 6.3°C and Bharmour at 8.9°C. Reckong Peo recorded 4.9°C, Seobag dipped to 1.2°C and Barthin stood at 5.6°C.

Sub-zero temperatures continued in tribal areas, with Tabo recording the lowest at minus 6.2°C, followed by Kukumseri at minus 3.5°C and Samdo at minus 2.4°C. Bajaura recorded 3.2°C, Sarahan 5.7°C, Dehra Gopipur 8°C, Paonta Sahib and Nahan both logged 10°C, while Neri recorded a relatively higher minimum of 11.2°C.
