Kullu: Continuous torrential rains across Himachal Pradesh have caused widespread destruction, particularly in the Kullu district, where rising river levels and cloudbursts have led to dangerous flooding in multiple areas.

In a concerning development, the only makeshift bridge connecting Baladhi village in Manikaran Valley was swept away by the swelling waters of the Parvati river on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) afternoon. The partial collapse of the bridge has completely cut off access to the village, leaving residents stranded.

The bridge, constructed by the villagers themselves after the devastating 2024 disaster, served as the only route for people and supplies into the village. With its destruction, locals are now facing severe difficulties in mobility and access to essential services.

Cloudburst in Sainj Valley, heavy rain wreaks havoc in Kullu

The situation turned critical across Kullu district after a cloudburst in Jiwa nullah of Sainj Valley washed away NHPC sheds and posed a significant threat to nearby Bihali village. In Banjar’s Horn Gad area, intense rainfall caused additional damage, while the Kathikukdi nullah and Brahma Ganga stream in Manikaran also overflowed, resulting in flooding.

Shimla also recorded heavy rain, adding to the growing crisis. Several regions reported extreme rainfall, including Palampur (145.4 mm), Jogindernagar (113.0 mm), Nahan (94 mm) and Baijnath (85 mm). The widespread precipitation has further strained infrastructure and increased the risk of floods and landslides.

Orange alert in eight districts; authorities issue emergency advisory

With the southwest monsoon now active across Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has forecast light to moderate rainfall until July 1, with heavy rains expected from June 25 to 27. An orange alert has been issued for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur. Kullu and Shimla remain under yellow alert.

The Himachal Pradesh Police headquarters has activated emergency protocols, instructing district police chiefs to deploy rapid response teams and inspect vulnerable locations. The public has been advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and hill slopes, and avoid non-essential travel. Emergency contact information including helpline 112 has been widely circulated.

In Kangra’s Thural region, two hours of intense rainfall caused severe waterlogging in markets, disrupting businesses and pedestrian movement. Streets turned into streams as drainage systems failed to cope with the volume of water, and shopkeepers were forced to shut down temporarily.
