Himachal weather: 55 roads closed across state due to landslides, 14 power transformers stalled

The persistent rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has resulted in the stalling of 55 roads, 14 electricity transformers and 29 drinking water schemes.

Mandi district reported 14 road closures, Shimla 13, Kullu 11, Kangra 12, Kinnaur 2 and one road each in Una, Sirmaur and Bilaspur. The continuous downpour has caused extensive damage, with the total estimated loss to various departments amounting to crores of rupees. However, the weather cleared up on Wednesday, bringing sunshine to many parts of the state, including the capital Shimla, providing temporary relief to the residents.

Western disturbance to bring heavy rain

The southwest monsoon has weakened in Himachal Pradesh, with clear weather expected to persist from August 22 to 24. However, a western disturbance is likely to become active from August 25 and a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain in several areas of the state until August 27. Residents have been advised to remain cautious as the state braces for the incoming weather system.

Biker killed after being swept away

A bike rider lost his life after being swept away by strong currents at Kattalnala on the Doli-Ramshar-Baddi road in Solan district. The body of the victim, identified as Shashi Pal, a resident of Manjyari village in Saur tehsil of Ramshahar, was found near Dharmana Kund, 2 km from the site of the incident. The National Disaster Response Force promptly reached the scene for relief and rescue operations and successfully recovered the body.

 

In Kinnaur district, frequent landslides at Nigulsari continue to cause significant disruptions on National Highway-5. On Wednesday, the highway remained closed for eight hours, leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides and considerable inconvenience for commuters.
