Himachal to classify police stations into 6 categories based on multiple parameters, notification out

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a new classification system for all 135 police stations in the state, categorising them into six tiers based on population, geographical area, crime rates, VIP movement, traffic volume, interstate borders, and tourist influx.


An official notification regarding this decision was issued on Saturday (March 1, 2025). The classification will primarily be determined by the crime registration data.


Police stations recording 276 to 300 cases annually will be placed in the ‘A Plus’ category, staffed with 70 police personnel and officers, and assigned 20 points.


Further classification will be based on additional criteria, including 10 points for geographical area, 40 points for crime rates, 10 points for VIP movement, 10 points for interstate borders and 10 points for tourist footfall.

Staffing at these stations will be allocated accordingly:
• A Plus: 70 personnel
• A: 65 personnel
• B: 48 personnel
• C: 37 personnel
• D: 25 personnel
• E: Minimum 19 personnel

Criteria for classification:
Population-based classification:
• Up to 35,000: 5 points
• Up to 50,000: 10 points
• Up to 90,000: 15 points
• Up to 2,00,000: 20 points

Geographical area-based classification:
• Up to 100 sq km: 2 points
• Up to 200 sq km: 4 points
• Up to 400 sq km: 6 points
• Up to 1,000 sq km: 8 points
• Up to 10,000 sq km: 10 points

Crime registration-based classification:
• Up to 50 cases: 5 points
• Up to 100 cases: 15 points
• Up to 200 cases: 25 points
• Up to 275 cases: 35 points
• Up to 300 cases: 40 points

VIP movement-based classification:
• 20 visits per year: 1 point
• 50 visits per year: 2 points
• 100 visits per year: 3 points
• 1,000 visits per year: 4 points
• 3,000 visits per year: 5 points

Traffic-based classification:
• Up to 500 vehicles daily: 1 point
• Up to 1,000 vehicles daily: 2 points
• Up to 2,000 vehicles daily: 3 points
• Up to 8,000 vehicles daily: 4 points
• Maximum of 1,18,780 vehicles daily: 5 points
The new classification system aims to ensure efficient police resource allocation, strengthen law enforcement and enhance the overall security framework in the state.
