KULLU: In a bizarre tale of deceit, love and betrayal from Banjar Valley in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, a man was duped by a woman who turned out to be a serial bride.
The woman, now in her fourth marriage, vanished just months after the wedding, taking along Rs 20,000 in cash, gold and silver jewellery and the proceeds from the sale of her husband’s ancestral land.
The police say she even made her husband transfer Rs 2.5 lakh into her account after convincing him of big business plans.
The shocking episode unfolded in the remote village of Baloun in Banjar area where Gyan Chand, the victim, had married a woman from the Bali Chowki region in 2024. The match was arranged through the woman’s brother, who assured Gyan Chand of her character.
However, within a few months, she allegedly began coaxing her husband to sell 18 biswas of ancestral land, claiming she would help him become a successful businessman.
Trusting her, Gyan Chand agreed and once the land was sold, the woman had Rs 2.5 lakh transferred to her personal bank account. She avoided every attempt by the husband to officially record her name in the local panchayat, raising suspicion.
Then, in April 2025, she disappeared along with cash and jewellery, leaving behind a trail of lies.
To Gyan Chand’s horror, he later discovered this was her fourth marriage. He alleged that her entire family — her brother, mother and father —were complicit in the fraud. He has filed a formal complaint against all of them.
Acting swiftly, the Patlikuhal police traced and arrested the woman, who is now being interrogated.
Kullu DSP KD Sharma confirmed the arrest and said further investigations were underway to establish the extent of her involvement in similar cases.
Locals are stunned at the audacity of the crime and the case has sparked concerns about rising incidents of matrimonial fraud in the hill state.
