Shimla:

In a significant move aimed at strengthening ties between the education and tourism sectors, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, and the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance mutual cooperation in the fields of tourism, hospitality and cultural promotion.

The MoU was signed by Harshwardhan Sen, Assistant General Manager of HPTDC, Hotel Peterhoff-Shimla, on behalf of the Managing Director, HPTDC, and Gian Sagar Negi, Registrar of HPU, representing the university.

The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of HPU, along with senior faculty members and HPTDC officials, including Ravinder Kumar, Deputy General Manager of Hotel Holiday Home, and Sitaram Sharma, Assistant Manager, Hotel Peterhoff.

Key highlight of the MoU includes special discounts for HPU community. The HPTDC will offer 20 per cent discount on accommodation and 15 per cent on food at its hotels and restaurants to HPU students, faculty, staff and their families, upon production of a valid university ID or authorisation letter.

Both institutions will jointly organise cultural festivals, food fairs and tourism promotion activities, such as the Himachal Food and Music Fest, to showcase local heritage and boost tourism. The MoU includes provisions for mutual publicity, allowing the use of logos, banners and standees at collaborative events and initiatives.

The agreement comes into immediate effect from September 19, 2025, and will remain valid until March 31, 2026, with the option to extend upon mutual consent.

Step toward experiential learning and tourism growth

Speaking at the event, Prof Mahavir Singh emphasised the value of industry-academic partnerships.
“This collaboration not only provides HPU students with hands-on exposure to the hospitality and tourism sector, but also contributes to promoting Himachal’s cultural identity,” he said.

Officials from HPTDC highlighted the corporation’s commitment to strengthening local partnerships and said this MoU will pave the way for greater community engagement and tourism development in the region.
