Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu’s political mentor and eight-term former MLA Vidya Stokes admitted to hospital

Veteran Himachal Pradesh Congress leader Vidya Stokes, known as the political mentor of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has been admitted to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla, evoking concern among political circles and the public alike.

Aged 97, Vidya Stokes was admitted to the IGMC on Monday (February 12, 2024) for medical attention. Chief Minister Sukhu visited the hospital late in the evening to personally inquire about her well-being.

State Health Minister Dhaniram Shandil, accompanied by a team of medical personnel, also visited the hospital, directing doctors to provide vigilant care and monitoring for Vidya Stokes.

Upon admission, Vidya Stokes underwent a slew of medical examinations, necessitated by her frailty and deteriorating health. The IGMC authorities said that all diagnostic reports pertaining to Vidya Stokes indicated normalcy.

The news of Vidya Stokes’ hospitalisation elicited a wave of concern and solidarity from various quarters of the political spectrum and the community at large. Shimla Urban MLA Harish Janartha, along with political adviser to the Chief Minister Sunil Sharma, principal adviser to the Chief Minister (media) Naresh Chauhan, Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan, OSD to the Chief Minister Ritesh Kaprate and Congress leader Satpal Raizada converged at the Chief Minister’s office to express their solidarity and inquire about Vidya Stokes’ condition.

Vidya Stokes, a stalwart of Himachal Pradesh politics, has adorned the mantle of public service with distinction, serving as a three-time minister and an eight-time MLA in the state Assembly.
