Himachal police to penalise actor Sonu Sood if his shirtless bike-riding video in Spiti found true

MANDI: Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, known for his philanthropic work, is now at the centre of a legal controversy after a video surfaced showing him riding a motorcycle shirtless and without a helmet in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.

The video, which has gone viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), appears to have been filmed in the picturesque cold desert region of Himachal.
It has sparked criticism and concern, with several users tagging the Lahaul-Spiti police and demanding action against the alleged violation of traffic laws.

Lahaul-Spiti police initiate inquiry

Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police (SP) Ilma Afroz confirmed the incident in an official statement: “A video is circulating on the social media in which a well-known Bollywood actor appears to be violating traffic rules in the Lahaul-Spiti district. Though the video seems to be from 2023, its authenticity is being verified. The matter has been assigned to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Headquarters, Keylong, for investigation.”

SP Afroz added that appropriate legal action would be taken if the actor was found to have violated traffic regulations. She also appealed to the public and tourists to follow traffic rules and demonstrate responsible behaviour while travelling in the region.
What does Indian law say?

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and subsequent amendments, riding a two-wheeler without a helmet is a punishable offence:

Section 129 of the Act mandates that every person driving or riding a two-wheeler must wear a protective helmet conforming to the standards prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Section 194D (inserted through recent amendments) imposes a fine of Rs 1,000 for helmet-related violations and may include disqualification of the driving licence for a period of three months in repeated cases.

In addition, failing to follow general traffic norms or engaging in reckless behaviour — such as riding shirtless in hilly terrain where safety is paramount — may attract penalties under various state-specific motor vehicle rules or under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) such as Section 336, which related to an Act endangering life or personal safety of others.

Response from the actor awaited

As of now, Sonu Sood has not issued a public statement regarding the incident. While many fans continue to support him, others argue that public figures must set a responsible example, especially when it comes to road safety.
