Jubbal (Shimla): After a prolonged legal tussle spanning over four and a half years, Ranju Negta was finally sworn in as the Pradhan of Sari panchayat in Jubbal near Shimla on Friday. The oath was administered by Jubbal SDM Gurmeet Negi, following a Himachal Pradesh High Court order that declared her the rightful winner of the 2021 panchayat elections.
The case dates back to January 21, 2021, when the Panchayat election results were announced. Ranju Negta had lost to Anu Rangta by a single vote — 246 to 247. Negta challenged the outcome, alleging that several votes in her favour were wrongly invalidated, while some votes for her rival were counted incorrectly.
High Court orders recount, overturns result
The High Court examined the election records and ordered a recount of the votes. During the recount, it was revealed that Anu Rangta had actually secured 244 votes, while Ranju Negta had 245, thereby reversing the original result.
Acting on the court’s directive, the Shimla Deputy Commissioner issued an official notification on October 14, declaring Ranju as the duly elected Pradhan.
Victory after a long legal struggle
Speaking after the oath-taking ceremony, Ranju expressed satisfaction over the verdict, calling it a “victory of truth and justice.” She said, “After almost five years of struggle, the truth has finally come to light. This is not just my victory, but a win for everyone who believes in fairness and democracy.”
However, her term will be short-lived as the next panchayat elections are scheduled for December or January. Ranju will serve as Pradhan only until the upcoming polls, marking a symbolic but significant conclusion to her years-long battle for justice.
