Shimla:Hundreds of advocates from the Himachal Pradesh High Court Bar Association staged a protest on Monday (April 21, 2025) by gheraoing the Chhota Shimla police station.
The demonstration came in response to an alleged assault on an advocate by the local police. The protesters raised slogans and blocked traffic, demanding immediate action against the accused officials.
Work disrupted at Himachal High Court
Due to the mass participation of advocates in the protest, regular proceedings at the Himachal Pradesh High Court came to a standstill.
The lawyers assembled in large numbers at the court premises before marching together towards the Chhota Shimla police station. The disruption affected the day’s hearings and judicial work, underscoring the intensity of the legal fraternity’s outrage.
Lawyers demand probe, suspension of cops
The protesting lawyers called for the immediate suspension of the police personnel involved in the alleged assault, along with a departmental inquiry into the incident.
They also insisted on the presence of Shimla’s Superintendent of Police and other senior officers at the protest site. According to association representatives, such behaviour by police officials under the guise of uniformed authority was unacceptable and would not be tolerated.
Say police can’t take law into their hands
Leaders of the Bar Association criticised the police, accusing them of abusing their power and acting unlawfully.
“The police are taking the law into their own hands under the shield of the uniform. This kind of misuse of power will not be tolerated,” said a senior association member. The association has warned that if their demands are not met, they may intensify their agitation in the coming days.
