Himachal govt coins new title for widows of martyrs, will use it in revenue records

Shimla:

In a significant and symbolic move to honour the families of fallen soldiers, the Himachal Pradesh government has decided to replace the term “widow” with “Veer Vadhu” (brave wife) in all official revenue records for the wives of martyred soldiers.

The initiative aims to pay lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes and to restore dignity to the women they leave behind.

Under the new policy, women whose husbands have laid down their lives in the service of the country will now be officially referred to as “Veer Vadhu” in government documents and land records. Similarly, the names of the martyred soldiers can be preceded by terms such as “Balidani” or “Shaheed” in official usage.

Himachal known for producing hundreds of brave soldiers

The move comes in recognition of the immense contribution and emotional sacrifices made by the families of soldiers who die in the line of duty. Himachal Pradesh, a state known for producing hundreds of brave soldiers who serve across the armed forces, has long felt the need to acknowledge the role of these families with more than just financial compensation.

Speaking on the development, government sources said that the change in terminology was not only a symbolic gesture but also part of a broader effort to change societal attitudes and ensure that families of martyrs are remembered with pride and respect.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and state revenue officials often visit the families of martyrs to offer condolences and support. The government provides ex gratia financial assistance, jobs and other benefits to the kin of soldiers killed in action. Now, this latest initiative adds an emotional and cultural dimension to that support.

Veterans, military families welcome move

The proposal is currently being processed and will be implemented across all districts once official directives are issued to the revenue departments.

Veterans’ organisations and military families have welcomed the move, calling it a “long-overdue recognition of the courage and resilience of India’s Veer Vadhus”.
