DHARAMSHALA: The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) has issued notices to five officials over irregularities in the Class 12 examination results. The officials have been given 10 days to respond to the notice, failing which further disciplinary action may be initiated.
The issue came to light after a major error was discovered in the evaluation of the Class 12 English subject. Due to a serious oversight, the answer key that had earlier been cancelled was mistakenly used again during the assessment of multiple-choice questions, resulting in incorrect scores for several students. The error affected the evaluation of 16 marks’ worth of MCQs.
Widespread criticism after suicide attempt by Class 12 girl
A girl who was declared fail in English allegedly attempted suicide, only to be declared passed after the error was rectified. The incident brought widespread criticism for top HPBOSE officials.
Following the discovery, the Board re-evaluated the OMR sheets of the English exam using the correct answer key and released revised results. Only the marks for the English subject were amended.
Taking serious note of the lapse, HPBOSE initiated disciplinary proceedings against a few staff members from the department concerned. Based on a fact-finding report submitted to the board, show-cause notices have now been formally issued to the involved personnel.
HPBOSE Secretary Vishal Sharma confirmed the development, stating: “The board has received the fact-finding report regarding the error in the English subject answer key. Based on this, show-cause notices have been issued to about five officials and staff members. They have been asked to submit their response within 10 days, after which the Board will proceed with appropriate action.”
Class 10 re-evaluation application deadline extended to June 5
In a related development, the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education has extended the deadline for Class 10 students to apply for re-evaluation or rechecking of answer sheets to June 5, in light of recent technical issues faced on the Board’s online portal.
Earlier, the last date for submitting applications was May 30. However, due to internet-related glitches on the Board’s system since May 28, many students were reportedly unable to submit their applications in time.
