Una: In a major push towards sustainable industrial development, a state-of-the-art solid waste management facility is being set up in Haroli in Una district of Himachal Pradesh as part of the Bulk Drug Park project.

The waste disposal plant, with a projected investment of Rs 55 crore, will be constructed over 16 acres and is specifically designed to handle hazardous organic and chemical waste using environmentally sound methods.

Advanced technology for safe waste disposal

The upcoming waste disposal unit will incorporate advanced incineration technology capable of neutralising dangerous waste materials at extremely high temperatures. This process will comply with environmental standards, ensuring no harmful impact on air, water or soil.

By enabling responsible waste disposal, the facility aims to mitigate the risks associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing waste.

Officials say this system is not just a technological milestone but also a key component of Himachal Pradesh’s strategy to balance industrial growth with ecological conservation.

Backed by central government funding

The project has received financial support from the Government of India, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to promoting environmentally responsible industrial infrastructure in states like Himachal Pradesh. This backing reflects a broader vision of encouraging sustainable development in ecologically sensitive regions.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate technical job opportunities for the local population, while improving public health outcomes by minimising exposure to hazardous materials. Authorities believe the facility could serve as a model for waste management systems across the country.

Green vision for industrial growth

A distinctive feature of the Bulk Drug Park is its 40 per cent green zone allocation. This includes planned afforestation, green belts and open natural spaces integrated into the park’s design. These efforts are expected to maintain ecological balance in and around Haroli, turning the park into a model eco-sensitive industrial zone.

Once operational, the Bulk Drug Park is likely to emerge as a flagship project for both industrial efficiency and environmental responsibility, a rare combination in large-scale manufacturing hubs.

India’s ambitious push for pharmaceutical self-reliance is set to take a major leap forward with the construction of the Bulk Drug Park at Haroli in Una district of Himachal Pradesh.

Designed to significantly reduce India’s overdependence on China for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), this park is expected to transform not just Himachal Pradesh’s industrial profile but also the nation’s strategic capacity in drug manufacturing.

India currently imports more than 65 per cent of its API requirements from China, a figure that rises to 90 per cent for some essential, life-saving medicines. This reliance has long posed a challenge to India’s health security, particularly during geopolitical tensions or supply chain disruptions.

With annual API consumption valued at around Rs 40,000 crore, any fluctuation in diplomatic or trade relations with China places India’s pharmaceutical supply at considerable risk.
