The monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly commenced on Tuesday (August 27, 2024), but the proceedings quickly descended into chaos as the opposition staged a walkout on the very first day.
The session, set to last for 10 days, is expected to witness intense debates between the ruling party and the opposition on a range of contentious issues, including infrastructure projects like roads and bridges, disaster management, rising crime, drug addiction and the merger and closure of schools.
During the session, a total of 936 questions will be raised, with 640 of them being starred, requiring oral responses from the Chief Minister and other ministers. The remaining 296 questions will be unstarred and will receive written replies.

Before the start of the day’s proceedings, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu extended a warm gesture by greeting the Leader of the Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, with a handshake. He also took the time to meet other members of the opposition, in what appeared to be an effort to foster a cooperative atmosphere.
Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania appealed to both opposition and ruling party members to work together in ensuring smooth proceedings. The session began on a solemn note with the national anthem, followed by a condolence motion for the late former MLAs Tek Chand, Narayan Singh Swami and Daulatram Chaudhary.
Chief Minister Sukhu led the condolence tributes, recalling the contributions of the deceased leaders, followed by statements from Jai Ram Thakur and Minister Rajesh Dharmani.
However, the sombre atmosphere quickly gave way to disorder as the opposition led by Jai Ram, erupted in protest immediately after the condolences concluded. Amidst loud slogan-shouting, the opposition members walked out of the House, setting a confrontational tone for the session.
