From crime scenes to canvas: Police officer Geetanjali Thakur’s passion for art dazzles Himachal

MANDI: A police officer’s commitment to duty often means sacrificing personal interests, but for 39-year-old Geetanjali Thakur, Deputy Superintendent of Police stationed in Mandi district’s Karsog, passion for art remains a priority alongside her responsibilities. A Shimla native and a 2018 HPS officer, Geetanjali recently showcased her artistic talent with a display of 250 masterpieces at Sardar Patel University, garnering attention from intrigued visitors.WhatsApp Image 2024 01 31 at 16.36.42

Geetanjali, specialising in Mandala art and fluid acrylic pouring, traces her love for painting back to childhood, mastering the intricacies on her own over the past five years. Despite the demands of her HPS duties, she expressed gratitude for the enriching journey, emphasising the therapeutic nature of painting during times of stress.WhatsApp Image 2024 01 31 at 16.36.39

“In the ancient Sanskrit language, mandala means ‘circle,’ symbolising cosmic elements or deities in Hinduism and Buddhism,” explained Geetanjali, highlighting the universality of mandalas as instruments of meditation across cultures like China, Japan and Tibet.WhatsApp Image 2024 01 31 at 16.36.40

“Mandala colouring is one pastime that can help you unwind from the stress of your hectic routine. Because mandalas need attention and calmness to color the circular designs, they can aid with focus. This strong involvement in coloring provides stress release and anxiety reduction” she claimed.

Having previously worked in government banks like the SBI on managerial posts and dedicating five years to her family, Geetanjali resumed her passion for painting after a 15-year hiatus upon joining the Himachal Police Services. Serving as DSP in Karsog for the past three years, she has earned recognition and praise from Mandi DIG Soumya Sambhavnan, fellow officers and the community for her remarkable exhibition.
