Dehra: Former Himachal Pradesh minister Bikram Singh Thakur on Sunday alleged that a Congress leader from his constituency had harassed a senior female police officer during a recent official event, leaving her in tears.
Addressing media persons in Jaswan-Paragpur, Thakur claimed that the incident occurred during the virtual inauguration of the robotic surgery facility at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda.
“I have valid proofs and documents that the Congress leader made that lady officer cry,” he said.
Thakur further alleged that the matter was reported to the sitting Superintendent of Police but no action was taken. “The worst part is that when the officer approached the SP, even then she did not get the required support. I know that a case has been registered under particular sections, but attempts are being made to suppress this matter,” he told reporters.
Drawing parallels with earlier incidents, the BJP leader recalled that another IPS officer, Ilma Afroz, had also faced similar treatment in the past.
“This kind of political patronage is not good for the welfare of society. It not only demoralises our officers but also sends out a wrong message about how women in uniform are treated,” he remarked.
The senior BJP leader’s allegations have triggered sharp discussions in political and administrative circles. While Thakur did not name the Congress leader directly, he insisted that the matter was serious enough to warrant independent scrutiny.
Thakur urged the state government and higher authorities to intervene and ensure that such incidents are not brushed aside under political pressure. “Our officers are the backbone of governance. If they are insulted or humiliated under political influence, the common man will lose faith in the system,” he added.
No official response from the Congress party or the state police was immediately available. However, political observers say the matter could snowball further if substantiated evidence is presented publicly, given the sensitivity surrounding women officers’ dignity and workplace rights.
