Shimla:
A 28-year-old woman died just hours after delivering a healthy baby boy via C-section at Shimla’s Kamla Nehru Hospital, the top public sector maternity facility in Himachal Pradesh, triggering outrage and allegations of negligence against the duty staff.
What began as a joyous occasion quickly spiraled into a controversy as the family claimed the woman was forced to eat despite visible breathing difficulties.
Condition deteriorates in early morning
According to hospital authorities, the woman underwent a cesarean delivery at 11.17 pm on Thursday (July 24, 2025) night and gave birth to a healthy child.
Her condition post-delivery was reported to be stable, with no complications noted until the early hours of Friday. However, by 9 am, she was declared dead, sending shockwaves through her family and leading to a heated situation within the hospital premises.
Dr Sunder Singh Negi, Medical Superintendent of Kamla Nehru Hospital, said, “Preliminary assessment suggests the possibility of death due to suffocation, but this is yet to be confirmed. A team of doctors is thoroughly investigating the case.”
The woman’s family insists that her condition had worsened by morning and that hospital staff ignored warning signs, instructing her to eat despite her difficulty in breathing. They allege that during the meal, her condition sharply deteriorated, leading to her untimely death.
“She was already unwell. How could they make her eat? She couldn’t breathe properly,” said a distraught family member. The family has accused the hospital of gross negligence and demanded an impartial investigation.
