The traditional Saigalu Nalwar Mela, organised by Gram Panchayat Kasan, commenced on Saturday with great fervor. Social worker and professor Anupama Singh formally inaugurated the eight-day festival that promises a blend of cultural evenings, traditional rituals, and spirited sports competitions.

Cultural Evenings and Local Performances

Panchayat Pradhan Bhintra Devi said that the fair has been designed to showcase local talent and traditions. Two grand cultural evenings are scheduled, featuring folk artists from the region. Women’s groups will also present cultural performances, adding to the festive spirit.

A unique highlight of the mela will be the ceremonial arrival of local deities, symbolizing the deep-rooted religious faith and traditional practices of the area.

Sports Competitions to Engage Youth

Alongside cultural programs, the mela will host several sports competitions, including volleyball, kabaddi, and badminton, encouraging active participation from local youth.

“Local is Vocal” Spirit

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Professor Anupama Singh appreciated the strong community participation, calling it the true charm of the fair.

“This event reflects the spirit of ‘Local is Vocal,’ keeping rural traditions alive. Such festivals not only strengthen social unity but also connect the youth with their roots and cultural heritage,” she said.

Formal Address Highlights Local Concerns

During her formal address, Professor Singh also touched upon developmental challenges in the region.

“Even after seventy-eight years of independence, Kotli and surrounding areas continue to struggle for basic facilities like roads, education, and employment. The issue of NH-003 remains unresolved. Until the DPR is approved and road construction begins, this struggle will continue. I assure you that I will stand by you in every joy and sorrow,” she pledged.

Massive Participation and Traditional Welcome

The inauguration was marked by a traditional welcome with drums, folk instruments, and vibrant processions. More than 15 women’s groups actively participated, adding to the grandeur. The event also saw the presence of Panchayat Up-Pradhan Roop Singh Thakur, BDC members, local police officials, and representatives from the Brahma Kumaris organization.

The fairgrounds were filled with a large gathering of villagers, who expressed joy and enthusiasm at the start of the eight-day celebrations. Residents believe the Saigalu Nalwar Mela will infuse the region with festive cheer and community spirit over the coming week.
