Dharamshala shopping mall fined ₹20 lakh for GST irregularities as Himachal enforcement wing crack whip

Dharamshala: The enforcement wing of the State Taxes and Excise Department has imposed a ₹20 lakh penalty on a shopping mall in Sidhpur, Dharamshala, for alleged irregularities in Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance. This is considered one of the most significant actions taken by the department in the district to date.

Located along the Dharamshala-Yol main road, the shopping mall houses multiple stores selling groceries, dry fruits, electronics, stationery, footwear and other household items.

According to sources, the department received information about large-scale GST violations at the establishment. Acting on this tip-off, an enforcement team conducted an inspection and demanded relevant purchase and sales records.

Upon scrutiny, officials discovered significant discrepancies in tax payments. Despite generating substantial profits, the mall operator had allegedly failed to remit the due taxes to the state government.

Following the findings, the department issued a notice to the mall owner, seeking a detailed submission of records. A thorough examination of the business transactions confirmed the GST violations, leading to the imposition of a ₹20 lakh penalty. The business operator has since paid the fine at the department’s office.

Speaking on the matter, a senior official of the State Taxes & Excise department in Kangra said the response from the business owner was unsatisfactory, prompting the department to take stringent action.
