MANDI: A day after the Mandi incident in Himachal Pradesh where a young girl allegedly died by suicide after her father confiscated her mobile phone at midnight, a similar father-daughter confrontation surfaced in Una. However, this time, swift intervention by local youths prevented a tragedy.

On Tuesday, panic gripped a village under the Haroli Assembly constituency when a minor girl climbed onto the roof of a five-storey building, threatening to end her life. The high-voltage drama unfolded following an argument with her father, but the alertness of onlookers saved her life.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 11 am when the girl arrived in the village by bus. Coincidentally, her father also reached the spot, leading to a conversation that quickly turned into a heated dispute.

In a fit of rage, the girl smashed her mobile phone against a wall and rushed to the rooftop of a nearby high-rise building, sending shockwaves through the area.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, some youths present at the scene sprang into action, grabbed hold of the girl and brought her down safely before handing her over to her family.

Local residents informed the police and officials from the Pandoga police outpost arrived and took stock of the situation, speaking with the girl’s father and other witnesses.

Mental health concerns surface

Sources said the girl was a college student but had been absent from classes for several months. Reports also suggest that she was undergoing treatment for a mental health condition.

The college administration confirmed her prolonged absence, raising concerns about her well-being. The dramatic incident attracted a large crowd, disrupting movement on the main road.

Locals expressed relief that the timely response of the youths prevented a tragedy, drawing parallels with the Mandi incident.

These back-to-back incidents underscore growing tensions between parents and adolescents, particularly over issues like mobile phone usage. Experts stress the need for greater awareness of mental health and better communication between parents and children to prevent such distressing situations from escalating to dangerous levels.
