Dharamshala: Chandigarh University, Mohali, secured the first position in the All-India Inter-Zonal Women’s Weightlifting Competition organized by the Association of Indian Universities and Himachal Pradesh Central University in Dharamshala.
Meanwhile, Mangalore University, Karnataka, and Shivaji University, Maharashtra, secured the second and third positions, respectively. The title of Best Weightlifter was awarded to Aarti Tatgunthi from Shivaji University.
The competition concluded at the Indoor Stadium of the Sports Authority of India. Among the dignitaries present were Prof. H.R. Bedi, Vice-Chancellor of the hosting university, and Prof. D.K. Vats, Chancellor of the Agricultural University, Palampur. Also in attendance were Sports Director and Secretary-General Prof. Suman Sharma, Academic Coordinator Prof. Pradeep Kumar, and Student Welfare Coordinator Prof. Sunil.
Prof. H.R. Bedi emphasized the unique experience of collaboration between a central university and Himachal Pradesh in the field of sports. He highlighted the significance of hosting such events, given the central university’s successful efforts to implement practical aspects of the National Education Policy and reach students.
Sports Director and Secretary-General Prof. Suman Sharma expressed satisfaction with the three-day competition, noting its role in providing a platform for the top 8 athletes from each category to showcase their talent and potentially advance to higher levels of competition such as the Asian Games and Olympics.
In the 87 kg weight category, Muskan Singh from Kurukshetra University secured the gold medal, followed by Tamanna from Kurukshetra University in the 87 kg category, Heena from Punjab University, Patiala, in the 81 kg category, and Jeevan Lata from Chandigarh University in the 76 kg category. Other medalists across various weight categories were recognized for their achievements, highlighting the diverse talent pool present at the competition.
