Shimla: A crucial hearing concerning the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in the Sanjauli area is scheduled for today (October 5, 2024) in the Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) court.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with local residents and political factions expressing their strong views on the matter.
The mosque, situated in a densely populated neighbourhood of Sanjauli, has been the subject of heated debates for months. Local authorities claim that the structure was erected without the necessary permits, in violation of the municipal building bylaws.

On the other hand, supporters of the mosque argue that it serves as an important shrine for the community and question the motives behind the legal action.
Today’s hearing is expected to focus on the legality of the construction, with both sides presenting their arguments. The outcome could set a precedent for similar cases across Himachal Pradesh, where land disputes and unauthorised constructions have been a growing concern.
Security around the court has been heightened as tensions rise in anticipation of the hearing. Local law enforcement agencies have urged citizens to remain peaceful and respect the judicial process.
The Shimla revenue department had recently conducted the measurement of the illegal portion of the mosque, which had two permitted floors while three are illegal. The measurement report will be presented before the MC court.
