DHARAMSHALA:

Congress leader and former Mayor of Dharamshala Municipal Corporation Devendra Jaggi has launched a sharp attack on the BJP and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, alleging that the saffron party is resorting to “secret conspiracies” to destabilise the state government.

Referring to media reports that claimed several BJP leaders recently gathered at the private residence of a former Congress leader who joined the BJP, Jaggi said that such acts reflected “political desperation and moral decline” within the opposition.

“If these reports are true, then the incident is not just a blatant violation of political discipline, but also a direct affront to democratic propriety,” Jaggi said in a strongly worded statement issued on Monday.

‘Plotting in private homes isn’t responsible opposition’

Jaggi said that in a democracy, every political party has the right to express its opinion, raise issues and offer constructive criticism — but conspiring to destabilise an elected government from a private residence is unbecoming of any responsible opposition.

“Political differences are natural in a democracy but those differences must remain within the boundaries of dignity and morality. Sitting in someone’s private home to plot against the government cannot be called responsible politics,” he said.

He further said that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has made it clear that the Congress government in Himachal is focused not on power, but on public service and development. “Every decision of our government is for the welfare of the people, not for personal or political gain,” Jaggi said.

According to him, a few individuals whose personal interests are not being fulfilled are now “creating false narratives and spreading confusion” to undermine the state’s political stability.

‘Is Jai Ram so weak that he’s breaking his own party line?’

Questioning the role of Leader of the Opposition, Jaggi said, “It is natural to ask whether Jai Ram Thakur has become so weak that he now needs to break his own party’s line and participate in such secret meetings?”

He claimed that even within the BJP, several senior leaders are said to be unhappy with the incident and consider it an example of “indiscipline and opportunism”.

Taking a direct dig at former Congress leader Sudhir Sharma who switched to the BJP, Jaggi asked, “Has Sudhir Sharma suddenly become the new Chanakya of the BJP that senior leaders are now holding secret strategy sessions at his home?”

“This question is not just from the Congress, but from every responsible citizen of Himachal,” he said. “If the Leader of Opposition in a national party like the BJP is engaging in such activities without the knowledge or consent of the central leadership, it raises serious concerns about the party’s internal discipline and the weakness of its leadership.”

‘Healthy competition, not conspiracies, strengthens democracy’

Jaggi urged the BJP to resolve its internal disputes within the party framework instead of hatching political plots behind closed doors. “Formulating strategies to corner the state government from someone’s private residence is not only inappropriate and undemocratic but also an insult to Himachal’s democratic traditions,” he said.

Reaffirming the Congress government’s stability, Jaggi stated, “Our government under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is strong, stable, and working with the trust of the people.”

He concluded by saying, “Healthy competition in politics is essential — but it should be constructive, not conspiratorial. The direction of our government is right, and our intentions are honest. The people of Himachal can see through such political games, and they stand firmly with truth and progress.”
