DHARAMSHALA:

In a tragic incident during the arduous Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, a 33-year-old man from Chandigarh lost his life while returning from the pilgrimage.

The deceased, Abhay, son of Kamal Kishore and a resident of Sector 15-D in Chandigarh, was trekking back with his cousin after having darshan of Shrikhand Mahadev when he reportedly collapsed near Parvati Bagh.

Rescue teams stationed along the route rushed to the spot and managed to bring Abhay to Bhim Dwari where he was administered first aid. His condition initially showed signs of improvement. The team then began evacuating him towards the Civil Hospital at Nirmand via the base camp at Singhgad and Jao.

However, Abhay succumbed midway between Singhgad and Jao. The road was blocked due to landslides and his body has been currently kept at Jao. It will be shifted to Nirmand for post-mortem once conditions allow.

First death during treacherous Shrikhand Yatra

This marks the first fatality of the 2025 Shrikhand Yatra season, which officially commenced on July 10. Each year, the perilous trek, which is marked by treacherous trails, high altitudes and freezing temperatures, claims several lives. Officials confirmed that 42 people have lost their lives in past years, with younger pilgrims aged 18 to 35 making up the majority of the casualties.

Considered one of the toughest religious pilgrimages in north India, the 70-km-long steep trek through Himalayan glaciers tests physical endurance, mental strength and unwavering devotion. Devotees reach naturally carved Lord Shiva ‘lingam’ at a height of (5,227 metres/17,150 ft).

Victim’s mobile phone, other belongings ‘snatched’

A shocking allegation has emerged from Abhay’s cousin, who claims that a porter demanded Rs 65,000 to bring the body down. When they couldn’t pay, the porter allegedly snatched their mobile phone and other belongings. Nirmand Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Manmohan confirmed receiving the complaint and has ordered a detailed inquiry.
