The Chamba Wildlife Sanctuary has yielded impressive results in tracking the movement of rare wildlife species through strategically placed camera traps.
While the presence of various wildlife species in the sanctuary’s 500-sq-km area has been reported for years, the recent camera footage serves as concrete evidence of their activity.
The camera traps, installed to monitor the movements of diverse species, have successfully captured rare wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard, deer and brown bear.
These images provide valuable insights into the region’s rich biodiversity and underline the importance of ongoing conservation efforts.
Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife) Kuldeep Jamwal said the camera traps had recorded snow leopards at two different locations within the sanctuary. “This significant discovery highlights the effectiveness of modern technology in wildlife monitoring and protection,” he said.
Officials and wildlife conservationists are optimistic that these findings would contribute to better management and protection of the sanctuary’s fragile ecosystem.
The data collected will aid in understanding the behaviour and habitat preferences of these rare species, ultimately assisting in their preservation.
“The success of this initiative reaffirms the department’s commitment to wildlife conservation and provides a strong foundation for future efforts in tracking and safeguarding the region’s unique fauna. The images captured are not only a scientific breakthrough but also a testament to Chamba’s ecological richness and the need for continued vigilance in protecting its natural heritage,” said Jamwal.
