Chamba (Subhash Mahajan)
With a focus on comprehensive rural development, NGO Aashray has initiated a project to transform 15 villages in the aspirational district of Chamba in Himachal Pradesh into model villages.
The groundwork for the initiative has been ongoing for the past six months and the project was officially launched on Monday (January 6, 2025) at the Savings Building in Chamba.
Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal presided over the event as the chief guest, accompanied by ADC Amit Mehra, SDM Priyanshu Khati, and other officials.
During his address, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the significance of the initiative, which is being implemented in collaboration with HDFC Parivartan. He stated, “Under this project, 15 villages in Chamba district have been selected to ensure sustainable livelihood opportunities through various activities. The primary focus is on community mobilisation, agricultural diversification and linking local products and art of Chamba to livelihood generation. This project aims to empower rural communities and promote self-reliance.”
The project, which will run for three years, is expected to set an example for other villages to emulate, fostering regional development.
Speaking at the event, Aashray’s Director Jinesha Dharani shared the organisation’s vision: “Our aim is to create sustainable villages within three years, inspiring surrounding areas to adopt similar practices. This is our first project in Chamba, though we are also working on similar initiatives in Mandi district and in Gujarat. The focus is to empower locals and ensure holistic village development.”
The initiative includes activities such as skill development, community engagement and enhancing the market reach of Chamba’s traditional products, ensuring that the region’s heritage contributes to its economic growth.
The initiative has been well-received by local authorities and is expected to bring about transformational changes in the selected villages, serving as a blueprint for rural development in the region.
