CHAMBA:

In a bizarre incident that has left many stunned, a patwari in Himachal Pradesh was allegedly assaulted for refusing to accept a bribe. The unusual case has emerged from Chamba district, where the government official was reportedly attacked inside his office after declining to prepare a false report in exchange for money.

According to the police, the incident took place in the Sillaghat patwar circle of Chamba. The victim, patwari Mukesh Kumar, has lodged a formal complaint stating that on January 2, the accused pressured him to fabricate an official report. When the patwari refused, the man allegedly attempted to lure him by offering cash and even placed the money on his desk.

The complaint states that the situation escalated rapidly after the bribe was rejected. Enraged by the refusal, the accused allegedly dragged the patwari out of his office and then assaulted him. The sudden violence created chaos in the office premises.

Hearing the commotion, a watchman rushed in to intervene, but he too was threatened by the accused. During the scuffle, the watchman’s clothes were torn. The accused has been identified as Gauri Ram.

Confirming the incident, Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani said that a case had been registered. “We have received a complaint regarding an attack on a government employee while on duty along with allegations of an attempt to offer a bribe. The matter is under investigation,” he said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of government officials and the increasing brazenness of those attempting to misuse the system.
