In a crucial development aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity in the Ladakh region, snow clearance operations on National Highway-3 have officially commenced under Project HIMANK.
The National Highway-3 is a strategic road connecting Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali in Himachal Pradesh, with a length of 427 km. It is a vital route for the movement of armed forces and supplies and is known for its challenging terrain and closure during winter due to heavy snowfall.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said in a statement that initiative is expected to restore vital access along the strategic highway, which is essential for both civilian travel and defence operations in the region.
The operation is being conducted under extreme weather conditions, with highly skilled personnel and heavy machinery deployed to tackle significant snow accumulations along critical sections of the highway, said the BRO.
National Highway-3, connecting Manali to Leh, remains a lifeline for transportation and logistics, particularly for the armed forces stationed in the challenging and high-altitude terrains of Ladakh.
Due to heavy snowfall during winter, the highway remains impassable for several months, making snow clearance operations a necessary effort to reopen the route ahead of the summer season.
Snow clearance teams from the 111 RCC/753 BRTF have been working tirelessly in sub-zero temperatures to clear snow drifts ranging between 10 to 15 feet at various points along the highway.
One of the most challenging areas of operation is the high-altitude Tanglang La, a pass situated at an elevation of 17,500 feet, where extreme snowfall and frequent avalanches complicate the snow clearance efforts.
Despite the harsh conditions, dedicated teams are ensuring that the road is cleared efficiently and safely, with an unwavering commitment to completing the operation.
“The ongoing snow clearance operation is expected to be completed in time for the upcoming summer months, restoring the critical link between Manali and Leh and supporting the region’s economic and defence needs,” said the BRO.
